Inversión enfática (Never have I…)
La inversión en inglés formal: cuando una expresión negativa o restrictiva va al principio, el sujeto y el auxiliar se invierten (Never have I seen…).

Cuando lo negativo va primero
Es un recurso de énfasis propio del registro formal, literario o retórico. Al sacar al frente una expresión negativa o restrictiva, la frase "obliga" a invertir sujeto y auxiliar igual que en una pregunta: negativo + auxiliar + sujeto + verbo. Never have I seen such a mess suena mucho más enfático que el neutro I have never seen….
El detalle clave: si el verbo no tenía auxiliar, hay que inventarlo con do/does/did, como en las preguntas. Not only he called ✗ → Not only did he call ✔. Es el mismo do-support que ya conoces.
Cómo formarla, paso a paso
- 1Coloca la expresión negativa/restrictiva al principio:
Never…,Not only…,Only then…. - 2Localiza el auxiliar del verbo (
have,is,can,will…). - 3Si no hay auxiliar, añade
do/does/didy deja el verbo en base. - 4Invierte: auxiliar + sujeto + resto.

También en condicionales formales
La misma inversión sustituye a if en condicionales de registro culto, omitiendo if e invirtiendo el auxiliar: Had I known… (= If I had known), Should you need anything… (= If you need), Were I in your position… (= If I were). Es muy frecuente en correos y textos formales, donde suena más elegante que el if.
