El subjuntivo (I suggest that he be…)

El verbo base tras sugerir o exigir

Es el "subjuntivo mandativo": tras verbos y expresiones que piden, exigen o recomiendan, el verbo de la subordinada va en forma base para todas las personas, sin -s: I suggest that he be on time (no is), It's vital that she arrive early (no arrives). El hispanohablante lo agradece, porque coincide con nuestro subjuntivo ("sugiero que llegue").

Dos rasgos que sorprenden: no cambia aunque el verbo principal esté en pasado (They demanded that he leave, no left), y el negativo es solo not + base, sin do: I insist that he not be late.

Qué lo dispara

• Verbos: suggest, recommend, insist, demand, request, propose, ask, require.
• Adjetivos (it's … that): essential, important, vital, crucial, necessary.
• Sustantivos: the demand/request/suggestion that….
• Alternativa británica: should + base (I suggest that he should be on time) — más común en inglés del Reino Unido.

Were-subjunctive

El otro resto de subjuntivo en inglés: para lo hipotético se usa were (no was) para todas las personas tras if, wish, as if/as though, suppose: If I were you, I wish I were taller, He acts as if he were the boss. En habla muy informal oirás was, pero en registro cuidado y en el examen, were es lo correcto.
